The
Grand Hotel in Mozambique which was once dubbed the pride of Africa was opened
in 1955. Today, a luxury hotel with 122 room, Olympic swimming pool, Cinema, Post
Office, restaurants, shops, halls now lay in ruins.
The
hotel was supposed to host a casino but the owners were never able to get
permission from the Portuguese colonial authorities. Trouble started when the hotel
which was built in Beira City, a popular Indian Ocean resort never attracted
many visitors and was eventually closed to guests in 1963. It was from then
used only for big events and parties and also served both as an army base and
prison for political prisoners during civil war in 1970’s
